Today, we’re proud to present the rebirth of a Galibier icon: Super Varappe.
Certain names resonate in the mountain circus like an eternal echo, embodying the history of the conquest of the summits. For more than a century, Galibier has been forging much more than shoes: we create true tools of passion, faithful companions to the pioneers of altitude.
Faced with an outdoor trend that too often favors disposability and ultra-lightness over reliability, we’ve made a militant choice. To go against the tide and get back to basics. We have designed this new Super Varappe range to accompany you in the next chapters of your alpine history.
Designed for multi-activity and approachability, it’s built to go the distance.
L’Héritage Galibier: walking in the footsteps of giants
We didn’t choose the name “Super Varappe” at random to baptize this new line. It is rooted in the very roots of modern mountaineering. The term “varappe” entered the alpine vocabulary in 1883. A few brilliant climbers from Geneva had popularized a place – a rugged gorge on Mont Salève. Naturally, they named it “la gorge de la Varappe”. At first, this inner circle was ironically referred to as “les varappeux“. Later, they were respectfully named the “varappeurs“, a group of pioneers who created the very first mountain clubs.
This is the pure essence of rock climbing, with every support essential. Total confidence in the equipment is at the heart of the Galibier heritage. Our workshops soon became a companion for the very best.
Did you know? Specific versions of the Varappe were developed in the 1960s in collaboration with our technical advisors. The initials of Pierre Alain gave birth to the “PA” edition, while the “RD” model, recognizable by its iconic blue color, was named after René Desmaisons.
The Varappe climbing shoes didn’t just conquer the Alps.
They built a solid reputation for Galibier in the United States, particularly within the elite climbing community. Royal Robbins, a legendary figure of the Golden Age and the conquest of Yosemite’s Big Walls, inspired the “RR” edition.
On the other side of the world, Australian climber Rick White, famous for establishing routes at Frog Buttress in Queensland, led to the creation of the “BB’s” model.
What are approach shoes?
Our previous models have left their mark on the history of mountaineering, and the Super Varappe is now the new benchmark. It’s the ideal shoe for approach walking, but what exactly are we talking about?
Also known as “approach walking shoes”. These hybrid shoes are designed for outdoor climbers. They are the ideal mix between the classic hiking shoe and the climbing shoe. By combining the advantages of both worlds, they enable you to traverse technical and vertical passages that resemble easy climbing routes.
Our approach walking shoes have a rigid sole with excellent grip. This guarantees perfect grip for both walking and climbing. The lacing is another major feature, running down the front of the foot to ensure perfect support. They also feature a sturdy stone guard. Available in a range of shaft heights, the choice depends on the terrain.
Heritage Techwear” innovation at the service of Alpine DNA
True to our DNA, we haven’t simply reissued an old model. We didn’t do it for nostalgia’s sake, because the specifications of the modern approach are demanding. The new Super Varappe range responds perfectly to this requirement, synthesizing traditional know-how (heritage). It also incorporates the most advanced materials (techwear).
This is our “Heritage Techwear” vision.
Today’s mountaineers are looking for versatility. They no longer want an ultra-specialized shoe that wears out in a single season, or a block of leather that’s impossible to soften. They demand a multi-activity shoe that can accompany them on a technical approach hike, switch to a via ferrata, then continue on a multi-day trek .
Materials made for the mountains
We have selected the best materials to meet the demands of approach walks and multi-activity in the mountains.
We have selected 1.8 mm thick Italian Perwanger leather . This family-run tannery, nestled in the Dolomites since 1780, produces this raw material, world-renowned for its natural water repellency and resistance to abrasion, while retaining the suppleness essential to walking comfort.
What’s more, thanks to the Sympatex membrane used on the Mid high-top model, your feet are guaranteed to stay dry, whatever the weather. Waterproof and breathable, it is designed with a hydrophilic molecular structure that efficiently wicks perspiration outwards while blocking the entry of water.
The Super Varappe benefits from Ripstop Dyneema technology. Considered the world’s strongest fiber (15 times stronger than steel for the same weight), it considerably lighten the shoe’s structure without sacrificing a millimeter of protection. A 360-degree TPU stone guard surrounds the whole, guaranteeing total integrity in the face of the sharpest scree.
Proven grip and reliability
Our partner, Vibram, ensures the grip that is essential when you’re on the wall. The Super Varappe features a complex three-layer sole block. Closest to the foot, an EVA foam midsole (45 ShA) absorbs the shock of long descents. In the midfoot, an ESS (stability system) insert locks in the shoe’s torsion to ensure precision on micro-slopes.
Finally, the outsole uses Vibram Durastep compound. Tests have shown that this rubber compound offers exceptional grip on wet rock, while reducing wear-related volume loss by over 50% compared to current market references.
And because at Galibier, reliability is not a marketing concept but a concrete commitment, the entire Super Varappe range is designed to be resealable. Extending the life of your equipment is the most important thing we can do to preserve the natural spaces we explore.

Whether you’re a rock purist, a fast walker or a fan of long technical traverses, the Super Varappe range is designed to meet your specific needs.

FAQ – Super Varappe
GALIBIER
The Super Varappe Mid is designed for technical trekking and multi-day walks: its high upper secures your ankles in scree and its membrane protects you from the elements. Conversely, if you prefer fast approach walks, via ferrata or multi-activity summer use, the Low version is ideal. Lighter, it offers greater freedom of movement and adequate breathability in hot weather.

To ensure that your Super Varappe shoes last a long time, let them dry naturally in the open air, remove the “insoles” (insole) to speed up drying and prevent moisture stagnation, and keep them away from direct heat sources. To clean them, waterproof them and find out more about caring for Perwanger leather, see our care tips. Don’t forget that the Vibram Durastep sole block can be resoled in our workshops.
