Summary

Galibier, a prestigious brand founded by the Richard-Pontvert group, has left its mark on the history of footwear and mountaineering with its robust and durable creations.

The creation of Galibier in the aftermath of the war

It all began during World War I when Rémy-Alexis Richard was sent home due to injury. He was tasked with repairing the army’s equipment, including the soldiers’ shoes. After the war, he bought his first factory in Izeaux (France) and began manufacturing all sorts of footwear. To distinguish his mountain shoes from city shoes, he created the Galibier brand in 1922.

In the 1950s, the Super Guide and Super Rando models were introduced. They quickly became classics, widely used by high mountain guides and mountaineers. The greatest names of the golden age of mountaineering, such as Maurice Herzog, Lionel Terray, René Desmaison, as well as legendary explorers like Paul-Emile Victor and Haroun Tazieff, all wore the brand’s models. These figures helped Galibier etch its name in history, as they made major first ascents worldwide, from the North Pole to Annapurna, all while wearing their Galibier boots.

When mountain footwear was reinvented

Like many historical brands, Galibier faced economic difficulties in the 1980s. A shift in trends occurred, with an increasing preference for plastics and textiles over leather. Sales of the Super Guide and Super Rando declined. In this context, the Richard-Pontvert house made the decision to put Galibier on hold in favor of its other brands.

Years passed, and trends evolved. Consciousness awakened around the desire to consume products that are both simple and durable, made locally. Historical and heritage brands were revived thanks to the enthusiasm of new generations eager to preserve their environment.

The awakening of the sleeping beauty

Authenticity, quality, ethics… Galibier’s legacy has made it a brand that is once again in tune with the times, perfectly responding to the growing demand for sustainable and high-quality products.

A century after the brand’s creation, the Richard-Pontvert group announced Galibier’s return, maintaining its rich and contemporary DNA. Investments were made to modernize production techniques while respecting traditional artisanal methods. This blend of tradition and innovation allows Galibier to offer products that are both modern and timeless.

More broadly, the return of Galibier is a celebration of heritage, quality, and a commitment to sustainability in outdoor footwear. By rediscovering its roots and adapting to new consumer expectations, Galibier proves that historic brands can thrive in the modern mountain landscape while addressing current challenges.
