Galibier chaussures super rando
Summary

For over a century, the Galibier brand has embodied excellence in the design and manufacture of mountain footwear. Founded in 1922 in the heart of the French Alps, Galibier is part of the Richard Pontvert group, which also owns Paraboot. Synonymous with durability, comfort, and quality, Galibier has equipped generations of adventurers and mountaineers seeking performance and safety on the most demanding terrains.

Origins: serving mountains enthusiasts

It was in 1922 that Galibier was founded, at a time when mountain activities were experiencing significant growth. The brand quickly specialized in footwear for hikers and mountaineers. Its reputation soared thanks to iconic models such as the Super Guide. This boot, crafted from full-grain leather and featuring Norwegian welt construction, revolutionized mountain gear by offering unmatched durability, waterproofing, and comfort.

The brand takes its name from the Col du Galibier, a legendary pass in the French Alps. This choice reflects both its deep connection to mountain heritage and its ambition to remain at the peak of innovation in outdoor equipment.

The legendary figures who shaped Galibier’s history

Over the years, Galibier has been embraced by some of the greatest names in mountaineering. Iconic figures such as Maurice Herzog, Pierre Mazeaud, Lionel Terray, and René Desmaison relied on the brand’s footwear for their expeditions.

These collaborations have allowed Galibier to stay attuned to the needs of mountain professionals. Feedback from these climbers has continuously fueled product improvements, solidifying the brand’s reputation as a trusted partner for explorers. The advertisement of the time, “chausse sûre”, stands as a testament to this commitment to reliability.

An exceptional artisanal expertise

Since its inception, Galibier has relied on artisanal expertise passed down through generations. Each pair, handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, reflects the brand’s commitment to excellence—from the selection of materials to stitching techniques and flawless finishes.

A key element of Galibier’s craftsmanship, Norwegian welt construction—a signature of the brand—combined with full-grain leather ensures optimal durability and waterproofing. This technique also reinforces the sole’s attachment and makes resoling easier, extending the lifespan of the footwear.

A long-awaited revival

After several decades of success, Galibier experienced a quieter period due to the rise of lightweight “light” shoes. However, the brand never lost its place in the hearts of mountain enthusiasts and outdoor gear aficionados. In 2025, Galibier is reborn under the leadership of the Richard Pontvert group. This revival is part of a broader effort to highlight the brand’s craftsmanship, through modern production methods that are also environmentally conscious.

Galibier today: the fusion of tradition and innovation

With its return, Galibier aims to meet the expectations of today’s hikers, while maintaining the DNA that made it renowned. The brand continues to innovate without ever compromising the artisanal quality at the heart of its craft.

The new 2025 Super Rando Mid and Low models retain all of Galibier’s centuries-old expertise—durability, robustness, and reparability—while incorporating cutting-edge materials such as a Vibram Springlug sole for excellent grip and a Sympatex membrane ensuring the shoe’s waterproofness. This membrane is an environmentally friendly choice, not only because it is 100% recyclable but also because it is OEKO-TEX® certified and free from PFAS/PTFE (so-called “forever chemicals”). A sustainable choice that has proven effective in other iconic models, such as the Jorasses and Pelvoux.

We believe in sustainable production, respectful of our environment, and we believe that, no matter the conditions encountered in the mountains, the strength and technicality of a product should never be compromised.

Galibier embodies a century of passion for the mountains, respect for craftsmanship, and a commitment to its users. Its rich history and collaborations with the greatest names in mountaineering have made this brand a true institution in the outdoor world. As the brand writes a new chapter in its history, it continues to inspire all those who dream of exploring new paths.
