Summary

First of all, a waterproof hiking boot ensures that you can move forward with peace of mind when the trails are full of water. In the mountains, the weather changes rapidly: rain, dew, spring snow… A shoe with a high upper protects from the cold and supports the ankle.

At Galibier, we design reliable waterproof hiking boots. Find the low model for fast walking and the mid model for longer ascents.

Wet feet cool down quickly, promoting the formation of blisters and the development of unpleasant odors. Conversely, a waterproof, breathable hiking boot blocks external water while evacuating internal sweat/transpiration. Waterproof lining, gusseted tongue and seams make all the difference. The foot remains dry, healthy and responsive.

Experience of the terrain and mountains guides our choices. As a result, cramponing and requirements vary according to use, from brisk walking to scree slopes. That’s why our aim is simple: to help you choose the right pair of leather hiking boots to keep you dry, whatever the season.

Galibier: waterproofing through time

René Desmaison – Galibier technical advisor

Did you know? At Galibier, waterproofing is nothing new. Our early pairs were protected with natural greases and very tight stitched constructions, highly effective against snow and mud.

Not to mention the layer of resin applied over the Norwegian welt to shield the boot from harsh conditions. Over the decades, we’ve combined these techniques (generous rubber rands, precise upper/sole junction) with modern waterproof-breathable membranes.

Today, we favour Sympatex®: a waterproof-breathable membrane, free of PFC/PTFE and 100% recyclable.

Why choose waterproof hiking boots?

The weather is often unpredictable. Summer thunderstorms. Autumn drizzle. Spring showers. On uneven ground, water collects in hollows. Soaked grass sticks to stems. Rocks become slippery. In this context, wearing waterproof hiking boots brings major benefits.

Waterproof protection

Dry feet remain warm and reactive. When water penetrates, temperature drops. Proprioception declines. Support becomes blurred. A waterproof, breathable upper maintains precise support. It limits slips and certain risks of injury.

Comfortable shoe

Internal humidity creates friction. The water barrier breaks this vicious circle. Perspiration drains away. Water from the outside stays in. Result: fewer blisters, less pain. More energy at the end of the stage.

A dry lining limits bacteria. Bad odors are reduced. Glues age better. Foams keep their shape. Shoes retain their performance longer. For fast walking, trekking or hiking boots, the benefits are clear. Staying dry increases comfort and efficiency.

Seasonal versatility

The waterproof hiking boot covers a wide range of situations: morning dew, sudden showers, shallow streams and spring snow. This reduces the number of pairs you need.

What waterproofing technologies are available?

The waterproofing of a hiking boot is based on a combination of complementary technologies . Some act on the surface, others on the inside of the upper. Their role: to prevent water penetration while allowing perspiration to escape. From water-repellent treatments to waterproof-breathable membranes and waterproof constructions, each solution responds to a precise need, depending on the practice and conditions encountered.

Waterproof vs. water-repellent: what’s the difference?

Water-repellent and waterproof are often confused. They complement each other, but don’t provide the same level of protection.

A water-repellent textile causes water to bead up on the surface thanks to a specific treatment (often a DWR coating, for Durable Water Repellent).

Water glides over the fabric without penetrating the fibers: ideal for a drizzle or light shower. Prolonged rainfall, however, eventually saturates the fabric: moisture gradually penetrates the outer layers.

An impermeable material prevents water infiltration.

The textile structure (often combined with an internal membrane, such as Sympatex® or Gore-Tex®) completely blocks out water, while allowing perspiration vapor to escape. The result: your feet stay dry, even in heavy rain or thunderstorms.

Waterproof hiking boots often combine a breathable membrane (Sympatex® or Gore-Tex®) with a DWR water-repellent treatment applied to the leather or outer fabric.

Durable water repellent (DWR) treatment allows water to bead up on the surface. The stem becomes saturated less quickly. It’s effective in light drizzle or brief contact with humidity. But it does not replace a membrane. It must be reactivated regularly.

Waterproof and breathable membranes: Sympatex® and Gore-Tex® fabrics

Two waterproof/breathable membranes dominate today’s hiking world: Sympatex® and Gore-Tex®. Their role is identical: to prevent water from entering while allowing moisture vapor to escape, so as to maintain optimum comfort throughout the walk.

The Sympatex® membrane is 100% recyclable and free from PTFE and PFC, two chemical compounds often found in conventional membranes. Based on hydrophilic technology, it attracts water vapor and transfers it to the outside, while blocking liquid water.

Gros plan de la membrane Sympatex® : structure hydrophile sans pores, imperméable et respirante, sans PFC/PTFE, utilisée sur les chaussures Galibier.

This “pore-free” structure ensures total waterproofness, active breathability and lasting thermal stability, even during sustained exertion or in humid climates. Used on many waterproof leather hiking boots, it guarantees comfort and protection in all seasons.

Its additional advantage: an environmentally-friendly design, perfectly aligned with more responsible mountaineering.

The Sympatex® membrane is designed to cope with even the wettest and most changeable mountain conditions. It forms a reliable waterproof barrier, while allowing internal moisture vapor to escape naturally. The result: dry feet, constant comfort and long-lasting performance. That’s the essence of Sympatex® technology applied to hiking.

The Gore-Tex® membrane is a historic outdoor benchmark. The membrane is based on a microporous structure made up of millions of microscopic pores, some 20 000 times smaller than a drop of water, but 700 times larger than a molecule of steam. This principle effectively blocks rain, snow and wind, while allowing perspiration to escape.

This means constant breathability and proven protection, even in intense or prolonged conditions. Depending on the variant, some Gore-Tex® membranes are more robust and abrasion-resistant, while others are lighter and more flexible, so they can be adapted to all types of terrain.

Finally, Gore-Tex® remains the benchmark for alpine hiking, technical terrain or extreme weather conditions, even if its composition (including PTFE) makes it less environmentally virtuous than Sympatex®.

Construction and finishing: the secrets of waterproofing

The effectiveness of waterproof footwear depends on more than just the membrane. Every component plays an essential role in protecting against moisture:

  1. Tongue gusset: placed high up, it prevents water from entering the upper.
  2. Protected seams: reinforce the barrier and limit infiltration.
  3. Shank/sole junction: this must remain perfectly sealed. On our Super Guide model, a special seal extends protection.
  4. Stone guard: protects the upper and impact zones. Lateral reinforcements limit abrasion wear.
  5. Stem height: this has a direct influence on waterproofness. A mid or rising stem retards water entry through the collar.
  6. Sole: this also contributes to performance. Appropriate crampons guarantee grip on mud, rock or damp limestone.

Traditional techniques such as Norwegian stitching extend the effectiveness of modern membranes to provide long-lasting protection, even in the most demanding terrain.

At Galibier, every waterproof women’s men’s hiking boots benefits from precise finishing touches: waterproof seams, sturdiness and a notched sole resistant to alpine humidity. It’s the entire design that comes into play. The choice of leather, the quality of the assembly and the precision of the stitching reinforce the protective barrier.

Choosing the right waterproof hiking boot

The choice of a waterproof hiking boot depends above all on your morphology and the type of terrain. The aim is to find the right balance between support, comfort and breathability.

Waterproof hiking boots for men

A waterproof hiking boot for men can be identified by its instep and padded collar, designed to provide stability and support on technical terrain.

When hiking with portage, opt for a mid or high upper : it supports the ankle, improves balance and reduces friction on long descents.

What’s more, a rigid sole ensures secure support on wet ground, while its pronounced crampons guarantee excellent grip. These models are ideal for demanding hikers looking for durability and safety.

Women’s waterproof hiking boots

A waterproof women’s hiking boot features a fitted heel and refined instep for precise support and lasting comfort. Its shape limits friction, even on long stages.

In warm climates, opt for waterproof, lightweight women’s hiking boots: their quick-drying, breathable properties ensure constant comfort, even after rain.

The women’s low waterproof shoe is distinguished by its lightness and flexibility. Ideal for summer walks and rolling trails, they combine dynamism and protection.

Durable comfort on all terrains

The waterproof membrane plays an essential role: it blocks the rain while allowing water vapor to escape. This keeps your feet dry and responsive, whether in a thunderstorm or in the morning dew.

Depending on how often you walk, choose a more or less technical waterproof hiking boot: lightweight for fast walking, reinforced for alpine terrain.

At Galibier, every pair – men’s or women’s, low, mid or high – is designed to offer lasting comfort on all types of terrain.

Occasional walking, trekking, long hikes

Each practice calls for a different level of support and waterproofing.

Occasional walking. Forests, hills, easy trails: a low stem is often all you need. Look for a fluid roll and versatile crampons. Priority: breathability.

Trekking 1 to 3 days. Alternating undergrowth, wet meadows and rocky slabs. A waterproof mid shoe stabilizes the ankle, protects the forefoot and remains cadence-tolerant.

Long hike and portage. 10-15 kg pack, technical stages. A waterproof mount secures your footing. The wrap-around stone guard becomes indispensable. A firm midsole increases support. Marked crampons reinforce stability on descents.

Chez Galibier, chaque tige est pensée pour un usage précis, du promeneur occasionnel au randonneur engagé. L’objectif est toujours d’assurer un confort optimal et une protection en fonction des différents types de terrains pratiqués.
